Diving crew holds deep ambitions

SHANGHAI - The crew of the submersible Jiaolong hopes to smancaa jerseyssh China's deep-sea diving record for the second time in two days.

Authorities said Jiaolong will attempt to reach 5,000 meters in its second test in the East Pacific Ocean, which was scheduled to take place on Friday morning, roughly 24 hours after it successfully dived 4,027 meters.

The vessel will complete a number of missions under water during its third trial, including taking photos, shooting video and taking samples from the ocean floor, said Jin Jiancai, secretary-general of the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association and deputy director of the submersible's diving test program team.

"As the submersible goes deeper, more pressure will be exerted on the craft, so the design requires a very high standard when it comes to preventing leaks,,Jogos Quentes Gold," said Xu Qinan, a researcher at the China Ship Scientific Research Center affiliated to China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and Jiaolong's chief designer. "We used titanium alloy to make the craft, which is flexible and sustainable under high pressure."

Under orders from commander-in-chief Liu Feng, the manned submersible embarked on its first trial dive at around 3 am on Thursday. It reached a depth of 1,777 meters at 4 am and reached 4,027 meters at 5:26 am, the State Oceanic Administration said.
